At St Mary’s, we are committed to nurturing the growth of all learners’ social and emotional well-being. Through Classroom Mastery, our learners engage in explicit and consistent routines that support positive learning environments. These include clear expectations for classroom entry and exit, cues to begin learning, structured transitions, and agreed voice levels. These predictable practices help learners feel safe, focused, and ready to learn.
St Mary’s social and emotional learning program includes explicit teaching and learning focused on Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships (RRRR). Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, our curriculum equips learners with the skills to understand themselves and others, build healthy relationships, and navigate life, work, and learning effectively.
In junior classrooms (F–2), Wellbeing lessons are supported through the Grow Your Mind program, which helps learners develop emotional awareness, resilience, and positive learning habits from an early age. This learning enables learners to regulate emotions, develop empathy, and strengthen social connections, supporting their ability to engage in positive interactions, collaborate effectively in teams, and respond to challenges with respect and resilience.
St Mary’s is further supported by an on-site social worker and a Family and Community Liaison Officer, who work with learners in small, targeted groups. These programs utilise evidence-based approaches informed by Berry Street, Seasons for Growth, and Social Stencil, ensuring targeted support for learners’ emotional and social development.
In addition, St Mary’s has access to a qualified psychologist who provides individualised 1:1 therapeutic support for learners who require more intensive emotional and mental health intervention. This service strengthens our capacity to respond to diverse wellbeing needs in a timely and professional manner.
St Mary’s uses formative and summative data to meet the needs of the school community, and strives to provide educational opportunities for both learners and families, ensuring we are working together to create a positive and supportive community. Underpinned by a restorative approach, St Mary’s recognises that a healthy community enables learning and progress for all!
